Review: Black Bear Diner – Beaverton

The first time I went to a Black Bear Diner was about five years ago. My family and I were on our way to Sunriver and we stopped for lunch at the Bear in Madras. The first thing I smelled and saw when we walked in the door was a large glassed in rotisserie oven, cooking turkeys. Well that sold me, I decided to order a hot turkey sandwich and from that day on I have been a big fan.

In 1995, founders Bob & Laurie Manley, along with founding partner Bruce Dean, created the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, California. In choosing a name and a theme for their restaurant, Bob, Laurie, and Bruce, immediately decided upon the black bear. It was a natural. The legendary black bear is native to the Mt. Shasta area. Today there are 40 locations in the Western United States.

When the Beaverton location opened shortly after that trip I was sad to see there was no glassed in rotisserie, but the quality and quantity of the food was still as good as ever.

This Sunday my daughter Jessi and I dropped by the Beaverton Bear for lunch. After looking at the menu I decided to try the Hot Turkey sandwich again. The turkey was moist the bread fresh and the gravy plentiful. One thing you never have to worry about when you eat at the Bear is leaving hungry.

Hot Turkey Sandwich

Jessi was in the mood to have breakfast for lunch and she ordered the Chorizo Scramble: a delicious combination of scrambled egg mixed with chorizo and covered with jack cheese, and served with hash browns, tortilla, and homemade salsa. “It was a pure pleasure eating at the Black Bear! The atmosphere of the diner was comforting, and homey. Everything tasted fresh, and was perfectly cooked! “Jessi highly recommend’s the Black Bear to anyone who is looking for a good ole’ home cooked meal.

Chorizo Scramble

The prices are very reasonable my Hot Turkey Sandwich was $7.99 and Jessi’s Chorizo Scramble was only $8.99. So if you are looking for a good place for lunch in Beaverton one of my personal favorites is the Black bear Diner.
